On February 3-4, 2025, the Novotel Centrum in Warsaw hosted a interoperability testing event for digital identity wallets, bringing together technical teams from across the POTENTIAL consortium. With 140 participants, this event marked the first large-scale effort to validate cross-border compatibility between various national implementations of digital identity wallets.
Key achievements
This event was an important step towards achieving digital identity interoperability across the European Union. By enabling cross-border verification and ensuring smooth interactions between digital wallets and relying parties, the project moves closer to delivering a trusted, user-friendly digital identity solution for European citizens.
- 159 interoperability tests conducted
- 15 digital identity wallets tested in peer-to-peer mode, representing 14 European countries
- 20 user services successfully tested
- One playground fully compatible with SD-JWT and MDOC standards
Testing phases and objectives
The scope of this event was focused on the remote presentation of pre-loaded attestations. Participants ensured that national implementations could effectively communicate with each other and with relying parties.
The testing was carried out in two structured phases:
- Phase 1: Interactions between wallet providers and the playground, as well as between relying parties and the playground.
- Phase 2: Full interoperability testing conducted directly between wallet providers and relying parties.
This systematic approach allowed stakeholders to verify their ability to exchange and validate digital identity credentials in a controlled environment before moving toward real-world deployment.

A Step forward for EU Digital Identity
With these successful tests, the European digital identity ecosystem is advancing towards full-scale deployment. The findings from this event will contribute to refining technical frameworks, ensuring compatibility across different national solutions, and facilitating the secure and seamless adoption of digital identity wallets across Europe.
The commitment and expertise demonstrated during these two days reflect the shared vision of all participants: making interoperable EU digital identity wallets a reality. Stay tuned for updates on the next phases of testing and further developments in this ambitious initiative.
